The Bauer Typefoundry first released the Beton family of types in 1936. Created by the German type designer Heinrich Jost, the present digital version of the Beton family consists of six slab serif typefaces. First developed during the early 1800s, by the 1930s slab serif faces had become one of many stock styles of type developed by foundries all over the world. Because of their distance from pen-drawn forms and their industrial appearance, they were seen as modern typefaces (their serifs kept them from being too modern). Faces like Beton were interesting contemporary competitors with more thoroughly modern experiments like Basic Commercial and Futura. The first slab serif typefaces, like Adrian Frutiger's revival Egyptienne F were outgrowths of didone style text faces (e.g., Walbaum). As newspapers and advertising grew in importance in the western world (especially in Wild West America), type founders and printers began to create bigger, bolder typefaces, which would set large headlines apart from text, and each other. Through display tactics, businesses and industry could begin to visually differentiate their products from one another. This craze eventually led to the development of monster sized wood type, among other things. By the 20th Century, the typographic establishment had begun to tame, categorize, and codify 19th Century type styles. It was in the wake of this environment that Jost developed Beton. Jost, one of Bauer's in-house designers, was also the creator of the prolific Bauer Bodoni, which is widely regarded as one of the best Bodoni revivals ever cast. The Beton family is a type family in a pre-1950s sense of the word. Although six styles of type are available, only four of them fit in logical progression with each other (Beton Light, Beton Demi Bold, Beton Bold, and Beton Extra Bold). The other two members of the family, Beton Bold Condensed and Beton Bold Compressed, are more like distant cousins. They function better as single headlines to text set in Beton Light or Beton Demi Bold, of as companions to totally separate typefaces. Beton Light and Beton Demi Bold are well suited for setting book text, and other running text applications that require sizes under 12 point. Beton Bold and Beton Bold Condensed may be used for shorter lengths of texts at 12 point or above, as well as for headlines. Beton Extra Bold and Beton Bold Compressed are best left to headlines and display purposes alone, although they could make a mean logo in the right hands. Beton is very similar to another 1930s German slab serif family, Memphis.

Richard Yeend's Neuseidler Antiqua is a superb addition to the TakeType Library, combining historical forms with practical, digital use. The Neuseidler Antiqua font family, made up of three weights, is inspired by the Austrian art nouveau movement, which took place from c.1890 to 1910. During this time period, Gustav Klimt, and other artists came together with architects like Otto Wagner to create a style that spoke to the modern era, the dawning 20th Century, and to the desired combination of art and industry. Neusiedler Antiqua's letters are each drawn with a single, mono-weight line, which is rounded at its ends. The overall forms of the letters are geometric and relatively rectilinear. The family's three weights, Neuseidler Antiqua Regular, Neuseidler Antiqua Bold, and Neuseidler Antiqua Heavy each have supplementary Alternate fonts available for purchase. These three fonts, Neuseidler Antiqua Alternate Regular, Neuseidler Antiqua Alternate Bold, and Neuseidler Antiqua Alternate Heavy, each contain extra ligatures, swash capitals, and special decorative letters for use in conjunction with their respective fonts. Using the Neuseidler Antiqua together with its Alternates offers additional typographic choices that are not available in many other fonts modeled after the art nouveau style. Neuseidler Antiqua's weights ship in OpenType format, and incorporate old style figures. Art nouveau is sometime referred to as the first international artistic movement. Artists and designers from different countries were employing similar methods in their work, yet creating slightly different styles. For example, the French style was quite different from the Viennese. French art nouveau was typically more curvilinear and organic. This formalism was applied to type design and lettering as well. Hoftype Standard LicenseBy buying this font you are agreeing to be bound by the terms of this Agreement. This Agreement, in conjunction with the receipt that accompanies each purchase from Hoftype, constitutes the complete agreement between you and Hoftype.1. Allowed usesYou may use the licensed fonts to create images on any surface such as computer screens, paper, web pages, photographs, movie credits, printed material, T-shirts, and other surfaces where the image is a fixed size.You may use the licensed fonts to create EPS files or other scalable drawings provided that such files are only used by the household or company licensing the font.2. Number of usersThe maximum number of simultaneous users is specified in the applicable receipt. All users must belong to the same company or household purchasing the font.3. Third partiesYou may provide the font to a graphic designer, printer or other service bureau that is working on your behalf only if they agree to use the font exclusively for your work, agree to the terms of this license, and retain no copies of the font on completion of the work.You may not provide the font or make it accessible to any other third parties.4. EmbeddingYou may embed the licensed fonts into any document you send to third parties provided such embedding is restricted to viewing and printing that document.You may not embed the licensed fonts into software or hardware products in which the fonts will be used by the purchasers of such products. Product UpgradesHoftype may, from time to time, update the Product. Product upgrade pricing may apply.9. Disclaimer and Limited WarrantyHoftype warrants the Product to be free from defects in materials and workmanship under normal use for a period of twenty one (21) days from the date of delivery as shown on your receipt. Hoftype' entire liability and your exclusive remedy as to a defective product shall be, at Hoftype' option, either return of purchase price or replacement of any such product that is returned to Hoftype with a copy of the invoice. Hoftype shall have no responsibility to replace the product or refund the purchase price if failure results from accident, abuse or misapplication, or if any product is lost or damaged due to theft, fire, or negligence. Any replacement product will be warranted for twenty one (21) days. This warranty gives you specific legal rights. You may have other rights, which vary from state to state.EXCEPT AS EXPRESSLY PROVIDED ABOVE, THE PRODUCT, IS PROVIDED AS IS.
