Each font contains about 1400 characters including small caps for all alphabetic characters, 4 sets of figures with lining and old style variations, stressed Cyrillic vowels, indices, fractions and so on. PT Serif Pro coordinates with PT Sans Pro on metrics, proportions, weights and design. It consists of 38 styles: 6 weights (from light to black) with corresponding italics of normal proportions; 6 weights (from light to black) with corresponding italics of narrow proportions; 6 weights (from light to black) with corresponding italics of extended proportions; and 2 caption styles (regular and italic) are for texts of small point sizes. The letterforms are distinguished by large x-height, modest stroke contrast, robust wedge-like serifs, and triangular terminals. Due to these features the face can be qualified as matched to modern trends of type design and of enhanced legibility. While Spiekermann drew the alphabets, he passed on the font data to Ralph du Carrois who cleaned it up and completed it. In the meantime FF Real has been extended to a family of two styles and 13 weights each.The design of FF Real is rooted in early static grotesques from the turn of the century. Several German type foundries among them the Berlin-based foundries Theinhardt and H. Berthold AG released such designs between 1898 and 1908. The semi-bold weight of a poster-size typeface that was lighter than most of the according semi-bolds in metal type at the time, gave the impetus to FF Reals regular weight. In the words of Spiekermann, the historical example is the real, non-fake version, as it were, the royal sans serif face, thus giving his new typeface the name Real (which is also in keeping with his four-letter names, i.e. FF Meta, FF Unit).FF Real is a convincing re-interpretation of the German grotesque style, but with much more warmth and improved legibility. With a hint towards the warmer American grotesques, Spiekermann added those typical Anglo-American features such as a three-story g and an 8 with a more defined loop. To better distinguish characters in small text sizes, FF Real Text comes in old style figures, f and t are wider, the capital I is equipped with serifs, as is the lowercase l. Whats more, i-dots and all punctuation are round.In Spiekermanns biography FF Real Text has proven to endure all challenges of a proper text face without an italic, while FF Real Head cuts a fine figure in larger sizes with a more reduced look.

The first two versions of the original Sabon typeface were designed for use with Linotype and Monotype composing machines; the last for the D. Stempel AG type foundry's hand composition sorts. All three versions were first released in 1967. Because the Stempel foundry version did not have the constraints required in for types intended for machine composition, it seems closer to a pure interpretation of its Garamond ancestor. So it was only natural that Porchez based Sabon Next on this particular version. However, he also referred to Garamond specimens, carefully improving the proportions of the existing digital Sabon while maintaining its alignments. The new Sabon Next family is large and versatile -- including Roman and Italic variants in six weights, from regular to black. The family's OpenType fonts also include small caps, oldstyle figures, alternates (swashes, ligatures, etc.), and many lovely fleurons. The fonts' lining figures are intentionally designed to be a little smaller than capitals. Sabon Next's character set supports languages for Western, Central, and Eastern Europe.
