One skeleton, two families: robust and rigid sanserif Akko and soft and friendly Akko Rounded. Each family has six weights (Thin, Light, Regular, Medium, Bold and Black). Italics are availbable throughout the family. The initial idea was to create a sanserif type with a ?soft-focus? effect. With rounded corners the overall look has a friendly touch, although its skeleton has a hint of German ?Textura? type. Characteristics: (1) simple and compact letterform. Especially the capital letters are space-saving. (2) subtly curved diagonal strokes on A,V, K, v, y, etc. so that the junction creates less dark spot. (3) extra ligatures such as c-t and s-t for adding historical touch. Also for the German language the c-h, c-k and the s-c-h ligatures have been reintroduced. It makes sense in contemporary usage where space is crutial. (4) soft-focused but clear and legible letterforms. A clear distinction between the cap 'I', the figure '1' and the lowercase 'l', and the 'O' and the 'zero'. (5) lining and oldstyle figures are available.

In an interview with Linotype, he said he felt an obligation to design a linear sans in the tradition of Erbar and Futura, but to also make use of the experience and stylistic developments of the twentieth century. The word Avenir means 'future' in French and hints that the typeface owes some of its interpretation to Futura. But unlike Futura, Avenir is not purely geometric; it has vertical strokes that are thicker than the horizontals, an o that is not a perfect circle, and shortened ascenders. These nuances aid in legibility and give Avenir a harmonious and sensible appearance for both texts and headlines. In 2004 Adrian Frutiger and the type director of Linotype GmbH Akira Kobayashi reworked the Avenir and created the Avenir Next for the Platinum Collection. It includes new small caps, newly designed true italics, and a complete new range of condensed weights.
